What happens when you try to create new digits?

Have you tried:

- Reset all settings

Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.

All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.

- Restore from backup. See:

- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

In order to fit Touch ID, try the next steps:

1. Go to Settings, tap Touch ID & Passcode, Enter your Passcode. Then turn off iTunes & App Store. Reboot your iPhone or iPad. Go back to Touch ID & Passcode in Settings and turn iTunes & App Store back on. Tap on Add a Fingerprint to add another fingerprint.

2. Remove and re-add fingerprints: Settings > Touch ID & Passcode > Enter the passcode of your device > Scroll down to find fingerprints. Tap on the fingerprint, which you want to delete and then Tap on Delete.

3. Restart your iPhone by pressing and holding Sleep/Wake and Home button.

People keep recycling this outdated advice. It does not work with the current touch id problem with ios 10. iTunes and App store is already turned off. Cannot add fingerprint, cannot remove fingerprints, cannot do anything related to touch id (iPad Air2). Rebooting give error message "unable to activate touch id on this ipad". Clearly, Apple did not do very good testing.

Same problem here with iPhone 5S after upgrading to IOS10. The device cannot activate the Touch-ID anymore.

I called Apple support. A diagnostic performed by Apple Support showed a hardware error in the Touch-ID Sensor. On my comment that it was working before on IOS 9.3.5 they replied that i could send back the device to Apple for a repair for 300€ or maybe lower if they didn't have to replace the Touchsensor. I assume that there are thousands of other users out there with the same issue. So i would not recommend to install IOS10 at this time.

True. I agree that the standard Apple troubleshooting and advice is irrelevant - this bug doesn't allow you to get far enough to change switches, log in or out, remove finger prints etc, it's an instantaneous "Failed" message. iOS 10 update killed touch ID on my iPad Air 2. Tried everything recommended. Good news is, I went back to 9.3.5 and Touch ID works as fine as it ever did. Hopefully there will be a fix - as soon as someone believes this problem isn't imaginary or a hardware service problem.

I like to add that finally I was able to report the Touch-ID activation problem to Apple Support. The first call was not so pleasant since the support person was trying to get rid of me rather than reporting an error. So i tried a second time and talked to a support guy from Berlin who was more technical, took notes and reported the findings. So i am very curious now whether they will fix this.

I have the same problem that my touch Id is not working anymore after updating to IOS10, before it worked fine!

Also I get directly the failed screen when I try to register a finger and I get a message after rebooting that it is not possible to configure the touch ID on this iPhone.

I think that the problem is coming when you had a screen replacement before that was not done by an official apple store. I think also that it is a software thing because the error pops up when you reboot. So IOS check on something if the hardware is original/valid and otherwise he give this messages and you are not able to use the touch id anymore.

I think it is a simular check than a not compatible charger that is not working.

So I hope apple wil fix this in a next update from IOS 10.
